When I was 16 years old, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life -- join the United States Army and become an officer. Now, 5 years later, I’m not only in the Army but working in my dream job as an Army engineer! Follow along as I detail how you can join the military and get your dream job too!


Step 1

Find out what you want to do. Before anything else, you need to know what you want to do. If you don’t know what specific job in a specific branch interests you, then finding your dream job will be difficult. So spend some time researching both civilian and military occupations and find something that sounds appealing. You can start by visiting a career counselor at your local high school or university counseling center to figure out where your strengths lie and which jobs might fit with them.


Step 2

Take a closer look at your interests and skills: Now it’s time to put pen to paper and figure out what in your background makes you a good fit for military service. Your resume is the perfect place to start! You want to be able to highlight relevant experience from past jobs, internships, school projects, extracurricular activities, and more. Don’t forget that any unique skills you have are fair game for your resume as well; there are thousands of job opportunities in every branch of service that require some specialized knowledge or experience. For example, if you speak another language fluently, don’t hide it on your resume! It could give you an edge when applying for an international affairs-related position.


Step 3

Identify What You’re Passionate About: You love animals. You always have. You volunteer at a local animal shelter to walk dogs, help with adoptions, and feed the animals. This isn’t just a hobby for you—you care deeply about animals and want to use your knowledge and skills to benefit them. If you were in charge of that same animal shelter, how would you make it better? Would you add more volunteers or bring in experts to provide training sessions? Think about how many shelters like yours exist across America (or worldwide) and where they tend to be located (rural, suburban, or urban). How do they generally differ from one another? What impact could improving their operations have on animals throughout your area?


Step 4

Plan Your First Steps to Get a New Army Job: Start building your network! As we mentioned before, no recruiter or hiring manager is going to find you, so it’s up to you to put yourself out there. The best way is through networking—both in-person and online. Networking will also help you learn what steps need to be taken before your reach out to recruiters or hiring managers.

Utilize Military-Specific Networking Groups: Join one or more military organizations that focus on career networking and community outreach. Even better: Visit them in person when you can. You never know who you might meet and what connections you'll be able to make! It's free, it’s a great way to network, and—if nothing else—you’ll be doing something good for your local community. A few to get you started: Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), Association of Talent Development (ATD), Human Capital Institute (HCI), Young Entrepreneurs Organization (YEO).
